Ph.D. Research Assistantship in Numerical Modeling of Sediment Dynamics in Response to Tropical Cyclones at Louisiana State University, Louisiana, USA

A Ph.D. research assistantship is available in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Louisiana State University to study wetland sedimentation and erosion in response to storm surges and wind waves generated by tropical cyclones using advanced numerical models in combination with in-situ observations and remote sensing.
Required qualifications: M.S. in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physical or Geological Oceanography, Applied Mathematics or a related field; a strong interest in numerical modeling related to storm surge, water waves and sediment transport. Prior research experience and good programming skills in FORTRAN and MATLAB are desirable. For detailed information, contact Dr. Q. Jim Chen, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering

Postdoctoral Research Position, Centre for Water Systems, University of Exeter, Exeter, UK

University of Exeter wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Researcher in the internationally acclaimed Centre for Water Systems to participate in “Collaborative research on flood resilience in urban areas” (CORFU) project. This EU FP7 funded post is available for period of 4 years from 1 April 2010 to 31 March 2014. The successful applicant will be focused on WP3 that will improve, extend and integrate modern methods for flood impact assessment.

The post will include developing a comprehensive and flexible framework that will amalgamate different methodologies for evaluation of all types of damage, thus enabling comprehensive and realistic assessment of vulnerability to urban flooding at different spatial and temporal scales. The Postdoctoral Researcher will also be expected to strongly contribute to other WPs, engage in the work on the case studies, communicate and closely collaborate with other partners and actively take part in the dissemination. The successful applicant will be IT literate and able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and travel to project meetings in Europe and Asia.
Applicants will possess a relevant PhD and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within the CORFU research programme. Ideally, applicants will have knowledge and experience in several of the following areas: flood risk assessment, resilience measures, climate change scenarios, hydrology, GIS and hydraulic modelling, real-time applications, uncertainty estimates, health impacts, adaptation strategies. It is essential that the applicant is able to work as part of an international, multi-cultural, interdisciplinary team and is prepared to travel to project meetings in Europe and Asia as required. Some industrial experience would be an advantage.
For further information please contact Professor Slobodan Djordjevic or Professor David Butler.
To apply, send the application form by e-mail.
Closing date: February 26, 2010.

Three research positions, FP7 research projects, Leuven, Belgium

Research Projects: THESEUS and FIELD_AC
The projects focus on the investigation of the impact of climate change on European coastal zones, and the impact of river flows and pollution on these coastal areas. The three researchers (who are expected to enroll in the PhD Programme) should focus on:
· Researcher 1: study of river flows and pollution in coastal areas
· Researcher 2: coastal hydrodynamics, including investigation of the impact of climate change on storm surges
· Researcher 3: near-bottom sediment transport modelling
